In fact, regular physical activity is one of the best things you can do for your health, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/diabetes\/living-with\/physical-activity.html\">Centers for Disease Control and Prevention<\/a> points out.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition, there are some special considerations if you\u2019re working out while taking GLP-1. Read on for the know-how you need.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Can you work out on GLP-1?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the journal <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC6908414\/\"><em>Diabetes Care<\/em><\/a>, the benefits of exercise include:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Lower blood sugar&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Better cardiovascular health and a reduced risk of heart disease<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Weight loss<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Improved well-being, including a lowered risk of depression and better sleep&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How much exercise should you aim for?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The ADA recommends the following weekly exercise if you have type 2 diabetes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A break from sitting at least every 30 minutes\u2014stand up and move around&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>150 minutes of moderate to vigorous intensity exercise\u2014and don\u2019t go more than two consecutive days without activity&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Three sessions of resistance training (read: lift weights) on nonconsecutive days<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Two or three sessions of flexibility training and balance training for older adults&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Tip: If 150 minutes sounds like a lot, work up to it. Aim for 30 minutes of exercise five days a week, or 22 minutes seven days a week. Despite the clear benefits of exercise, nearly a third (31.9%) of people with diabetes in the United States are physically inactive, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/diabetes\/php\/data-research\/?CDC_AAref\">National Diabetes Statistic Report<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you haven\u2019t been active, check in with your doctor first and start slowly. The most important thing is to start <em>somewhere<\/em>. Just setting a timer and standing up every half hour to stretch is a good start.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Something is better than nothing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Exercising for even 10 minutes can help, says Evan Sisson, PharmD, a professor at the VCU School of Pharmacy in Richmond, Virginia. The body is very efficient, and exercising muscle, like taking a 10-minute walk after eating, will immediately lower blood glucose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3 essential tips when you work out on GLP-1\u00a0<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are three smart suggestions from the experts:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Eat intentionally. <\/strong>The <a href=\"https:\/\/diabetes.org\/health-wellness\/fitness\/eating-tips-before-after-exercise\">ADA<\/a> recommends that you pay attention to what you eat before and after a workout if you have type 2 diabetes. You don\u2019t necessarily need to eat after low-intensity exercise. But it\u2019s important to have a meal or a protein shake within an hour of a high-intensity workout.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you take GLP-1, which decreases appetite, you also may not feel like eating anything before you exercise. But if you skip, you might get dizzy or light-headed. A snack or a light meal that pairs a carbohydrate with protein, such as an apple with a tablespoon of peanut butter, is a good option before exercise, according to the ADA.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Drink enough water.<\/strong> It\u2019s important to hydrate well before exercise. For every hour of exercise, you can lose up to 2 quarts of fluid, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hopkinsmedicine.org\/health\/wellness-and-prevention\/nutrition-and-fitness\/sports-and-hydration-for-athletes\">Johns Hopkins Medicine<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To help alleviate constipation\u2014a common side effect of GLP-1\u2014drink enough water to at least replace what you lose during physical activity. If you\u2019re exercising more and you also get dehydrated, it\u2019ll worsen the constipation, says Sisson.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Add steps to your day. <\/strong>Walking is a good way to start exercising, says Rachel Goldberg, a therapist and personal trainer based in Studio City, California, who works with clients who have type 2 diabetes and take GLP-1. If you go for a walk, you\u2019ll feel better about yourself, she says. And that feeling of accomplishment may then carry over into other areas of your life, such as choosing healthier foods.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A healthy diet, physical activity, and GLP-1 all support weight loss. Losing weight is often is part of a treatment plan for type 2 diabetes. Losing weight, in turn, makes exercise easier\u2014and that makes it more likely that you\u2019ll exercise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Start with any amount of walking and increase your steps over time. Also aim to up your effort by walking more briskly as you feel up to it. The more you walk, the more you\u2019ll benefit. For example, <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/37555441\/\">research<\/a> shows that walking about 2,500 steps a day reduces your risk of dying from cardiovascular diseases. And about 4,000 steps a day starts to reduce the risk of dying from any cause. Add more steps and you further decrease your risk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Supportive resources<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Barriers will come up, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK549946\/\">research<\/a> shows.
