For example, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/diabetes\/living-with\/mental-health.html\">research<\/a> shows that an estimated three out of every 10 people with diabetes in the United States also experience depression. In any 18-month period, a third to a half of people with diabetes experience diabetes distress\u2014a state of feeling overwhelmed, frustrated, discouraged, worried, or tired of dealing with daily diabetes care.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Untreated mental health issues can even make your diabetes worse. But when one of these improves, the other tends to also, and that\u2019s good news. To help, read on for some mental health <a href=\"https:\/\/diabetes.org\/health-wellness\/mental-health\/ease-diabetes-care-stress\">strategies<\/a> when you\u2019re on GLP-1 that can help you manage both your diabetes and your mind\u2019s well-being.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Mental health strategy #1: Get educated&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe first step is education,\u201d says Rachel Goldberg, a therapist based in Studio City, California, who works with clients who have type 2 diabetes and take GLP-1. The more you know about diabetes and your treatment, the more in control and less anxious you may feel. The American Diabetes Association has a <a href=\"https:\/\/diabetes.org\/tools-resources\/diabetes-education-programs\">directory<\/a> of diabetes education programs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, before you start taking GLP-1, it helps to be aware of potential side effects, such as nausea and constipation, and ways to alleviate them, such as eating smaller meals and staying hydrated. \u201cSide effects can be intense,\u201d says Goldberg. Knowing that they tend to subside over time can help you persevere through the initial period, she adds.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Mental health strategy #2: Reach out to your healthcare team<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Look to your team as a go-to resource for support as well as information. Be honest with your doctor if you\u2019re struggling emotionally. Up to half of people with diabetes who have depression don\u2019t get diagnosed and treated, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/pcd\/issues\/2023\/22_0407.htm\">research<\/a> indicates.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019re depressed, anxious, or overwhelmed, it\u2019s more difficult to do the things that help keep you healthy, like exercising, taking your meds, and tracking your blood sugar. Your doctor may refer you to a mental health professional for help. without needing much forethought.\u201d That can help lower the sense of being overwhelmed by the disease, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/diabetes.org\/health-wellness\/mental-health\">American Diabetes Association<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, use calendar reminders for GLP-1 injections. And think ahead when it comes to eating well: \u201cWrite down a meal plan for the next day, instead of just kind of winging it,\u201d Goldberg says.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Mental health strategy #4: Find new ways to ease tension<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>You may experience stress as a physical sensation, such as a racing heart, or emotionally as anxiety. People with diabetes are 20% more likely to feel anxious than those without diabetes. Stress hormones can make your blood sugar rise and make it harder for you to take care of yourself. Here are some ideas to reduce stress:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Go out and move.<\/strong> \u201cIf you go for a walk, you\u2019ll feel better about yourself,\u201d Goldberg says. That feeling of accomplishment may then carry over into other areas of your life, such as healthy eating. In addition to improving your mood, walking for at least 10 minutes can also help lower blood sugar levels.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Write it out.<\/strong> When you\u2019re feeling big emotions, Goldberg recommends putting pen to paper and writing free-form in a journal. \u201c[My clients] always say they feel so much more relieved after,\u201d she says. \u201cThat it\u2019s really helped them to figure things out for themselves.\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Join a support group.<\/strong> If you have type 2 diabetes and are taking GLP-1, Goldberg recommends seeking out a community of people sharing the same experience. Your healthcare team may be able to refer you to local resources or you can look online for groups.
