It doesn\u2019t take into account the full picture of your health, which include cholesterol levels, blood pressure, and metabolic health. Nor does it consider your age and gender, which are important factors to consider for weight loss.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBMI doesn\u2019t differentiate between muscle and fat, or account for where the fat is distributed in the body,\u201d says Dr. Rao. \u201cBody composition measurement is much more insightful than BMI.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr. Rao encourages patients dealing with frustrating weight loss plateaus to reinforce their goals and remember their \u201cwhy.\u201d That could be losing weight, reducing medications, or being able to keep up with their kids. Then, it\u2019s time to reevaluate your current lifestyle, especially when it comes to diet, exercise, and sleep.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Assess what you eat<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>When you hit a wall while losing weight, it can be tempting to experiment with the latest fad diets. Soda is a prime example of a drink with empty calories, packing in about seven teaspoons of sugar per can, says <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kidney.org\/kidney-topics\/five-sneaky-sources-sugar\">the National Kidney Foundation<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Making hydration a priority is just as important. You may not feel as thirsty when you\u2019re taking GLP-1. Getting enough water can also help prevent constipation, which can be an uncomfortable side effect of GLP-1\u2019s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Double down on movement&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>It should come as no surprise that physical activity is one of the best ways to break through a weight loss plateau.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And while walking is always a great idea for your health, doing that as your sole source of exercise typically isn\u2019t enough to make the scale budge when you hit a weight loss plateau. Adding some form of strength training to your routine is crucial for increasing your resting metabolic rate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Muscle burns calories faster than fat does. The more muscle mass you have, the more metabolically active you are, which really helps with weight loss. According to Dr. Rao, getting enough rest is one often overlooked factor in managing obesity. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3065172\/\">Research<\/a> shows that a lack of quality sleep is associated with more \u201chunger\u201d hormones, and that there\u2019s a significant link between short sleep and higher BMI.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So regardless of your diet or exercise routine, your efforts may not yield the desired results without good sleep.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSleep is restorative; it regulates hormones, supports our immune system, and even controls our appetite,\u201d she says. \u201cIf you\u2019ve hit a plateau with your weight loss efforts and aren\u2019t getting good sleep, talk to your doctor.
