If you and your doctor have decided that tirzapatide for weight loss is right for you, the best next step is to arm yourself with the information needed to make the process as easy and successful as possible.

That includes how to use tirzepatide in a way that works for your lifestyle. And, of course, limits the possible side effects and adverse effects. Keep reading to brush up on the basics and get your tirzepatide journey started off on the right foot.

Brief history of tirzepatide

In November 2023, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved tirzepatide as treatment for chronic weight management in adults with obesity. It also approved it for overweight adults with at least one weight-related health condition, such as high cholesterol. The drug is also used to manage blood sugar in those with type 2 diabetes, according to Mayo Clinic.

Tirzepatide is the active ingredient in both Zepbound and Mounjaro. It works by activating receptors of two hormones: glucagon-like peptide 1 (GLP-1) and glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide (GIP). These hormones are secreted from the intestine, and they reduce appetite and food intake.

Tirzepatide is different from other weight loss drugs in its class, including semaglutide, because it activates both GLP-1 and GIP, as opposed to just the former.

How tirzepatide is taken

In most patients, tirzepatide is administered by injection under the skin once a week. The dosage is increased over 20 weeks to bring on results, per the FDA. However, dosage may be adjusted to people’s specific needs, depending on their goals and other health variables.

In two randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trials, after 72 weeks of treatment the patients who received tirzepatide at three progressively increased levels of doses lost a statistically significant amount of weight, compared to placebo.

The difference between side effects and adverse effects

When considering tirzepatide, it’s important to differentiate between side effects and adverse effects. Side effects are common and expected reactions to medication (examples are mild nausea or headaches). They usually subside over time.

Adverse effects are more severe and medical attention is sometimes needed. Most medications, including tirzepatide, have both of these.

Common side effects of tirzepatide

There are minor side effects from taking tirzepatide that can get in the way of your daily life. These include nausea, abdominal discomfort, and digestive issues like diarrhea and vomiting. Other effects include reactions at the site of the injections and fatigue.

You can address and manage these potential side effects by using the following strategies:

  • Change your eating habits: Have smaller meals and eat them frequently throughout the day. This can help with digestive issues and reduce symptoms like nausea and abdominal discomfort.
  • Stay hydrated: Drink a good amount of fluids. This can ease nausea and keep your digestion healthy.
  • Try ginger: Drink ginger tea or try ginger supplements to soothe nausea.
  • Avoid foods that can trigger digestive distress: Stay away from fatty and spicy foods.
  • Eat mindfully: Chew your food thoroughly and savor each bite. This slows you down, which can help digestion and reduce discomfort.

If side effects stick around or get worse, reach out to your doctor immediately.

Common adverse effects of tirzepatide

According to the FDA, Zepbound—again, a name-brand drug in which tirzepatide is an active ingredient—causes thyroid c-cell tumors in rats. It’s unclear if it does the same in humans. Because of this, the medication is not recommended for anyone with a family history of thyroid cancer or similar disorders.
